“Sometimes When We Touch”

You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I’d rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I’m only just beginning to see the real you

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty’s too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you till I die
Till we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I’m just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty’s too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you till I die
Till we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

At times I’d like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I’d like to break through
And hold you endlessly

At times I understand you
And I know how hard you’ve tried
I’ve watched while love commands you
And I’ve watched love pass you by
At times I think we’re drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty’s too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you till I die
Till we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

Tina and Nik’s love life was defined by this beautiful rendition by Dan Hill. They had been seeing each other for about three months now. Nik was a die-hard romantic and he wooed Tina by writing long emails and dedicating songs. He would type the lyrics out for her.  “Sometimes when we touch”  was his first dedication. He emailed the lyrics to her. That was the era bereft of smart phones. There was no Whatsapp, Facebook or FaceTime. People wrote snail mails and more recently the quick fire emails to communicate with each other. The text messages on mobile phones had to be a fixed number of characters, so there was not much that could be communicated.

Every morning on reaching work, Tina would open her inbox with much anticipation. Sitting in her inbox would be a mail from Nik. He lived in Bali and she in New Delhi. Yes, there’s was a long distance romance. They had met through a common friend at work; online that is. They had spoken a few times on the phone and not surprisingly the sparks had started flying. She would read and re-read his mails over and over again, to her heart’s content, visualising what his life actually looked like, and had been before they met.

When Nik dedicated this song for Tina, it kind of took her by surprise. They had never met, let alone touch then why “Sometimes when we touch”. But she blushed and thought to herself, “Oh well, it’s a figure of speech and it’s how intensely he loves me.”
Thereafter, through the day and the days to come, Tina played the song on her computer as she furiously typed her project proposals. This was her favourite dedication from him. She felt as though Nik was by her side. His intense love for her, felt more than just palpable and believable. She could feel the passion with which he had started loving her, yet having not met her. She felt the same, but did not in so many words communicate that  to Nik. She was just being wary. After all she had been in a few bad relationships. She didn’t want to open her heart out completely till she and Nik met in person and got to know each other better.

Nik flew in to Delhi one November evening. It was pouring cats and dogs. The song playing in Tina’s car stereo was November Rain. Another dedication from Nik. She was picking Nik from the airport. It was the first time they were meeting and Tina’s heart was racing. She was praying hard, “Lord! Let this guy be the chosen one for me. I don’t have the strength to bear anymore heart breaks.”

Nik on the other hand walked out of the airport. His eyes searched for Tina. He found her standing amidst the crowd, with a turquoise umbrella in hand. Her partly wet dark tresses falling below her frail shoulders, her hazel eyes searching out for him in anticipation. She had not spotted him yet. Nik walked right up to her, flashing his ravishing smile. He looked like a million bucks in his white shirt and blue denims. Tina went weak in her knees, as he hugged her and she reciprocated shyly.
She thought to herself, ” It is so different to meet in person. It is awkward in some ways and in some ways so exciting.”

“Tina, finally we meet.” said Nik warmly.

“Yes, Nik. Finally!” beamed back Tina.

Nik had threatened to kiss Tina at the airport, in one of their conversations. She had vehemently denied him the right to. He of course was kidding.

As they got into the car and strapped their seat belts, Nik gazed deeply into Tina’s beautiful eyes.
“Tina, you are just the way I had imagined you to be. You look no different from your pictures.”

Oh! Nik, same goes for you too,” Tina had laughed.

As she started the ignition, Nik, pushed back her damp curls behind her ears and planted a kiss on her cheeks. Tina giggled like a school girl.

26 years later:

A couple sits at this lovely shack by the beach. The dim lighting from the fairy lights has set the tone for a romantic evening. The prequel to this was the stunning sunset they had just watched, holding each others hands. In the background, Dan Hill croons, “Sometimes when we touch…”

“Happy 25th Tina. This will be our song forever, won’t it?”

“Yes, Nik. Forever and ever.”
They gaze into each others eyes just the way they had 26 years back. And their lips lock into a passionate kiss.

This post is a part of Write Over the Weekend, an initiative for Indian Bloggers by BlogAdda.’ In this week’s Write Over the Weekend (WOW) prompt, we were asked to recollect our favourite songs and start with lyrics of one. Then allow that to be the base of the short story that would follow post that.
