Fill Yourself Up: #MondayMusings #GuestPost #Blogiversary
Fill Yourself Up- Corinne Rodrigues
As I sit reading a romance novel, nibbling on peanuts, my thoughts start to wander to all the things I could be doing during this time. It seems like I’m wasting my time on something frivolous when I could be doing so much more – like settling cupboards, responding to important emails, or even planning more posts on my blog. The more I think about this, the guiltier I feel. Then I tell my ‘parent‘ to go take a hike, while I fill myself up with something that brought me joy.
I start to think of all the things that fill me up and that I deny myself from enjoying, because they don’t feel important enough.
Fresh flowers – When we moved into this home, I told my husband that he should buy me fresh flowers regularly. He’s forgotten. But why do I have to wait for someone else to bring me the flowers I enjoy?
Watching movies – My husband is not really into movies and I don’t have the inclination to go to a theatre to watch a movie. Should I stop watching movies, or find ways to watch them online?
Snapping pictures – I love taking pictures while walking or travelling and I find it easiest to do so on a phone. But the picture quality on my previous phone was not all that great. It took me two months and a lot of coaxing on my husband’s part to invest in an expensive phone, so I can enjoy snapping pictures and sharing them with my friends and readers.
Reading – I love reading. From mindless romance novels to non-fiction. I get a lot of free books to review. Jose and I have loads of books lying in our flat in Mumbai. Most of my books in Hyderabad are on my Kindle. But there are some books I’ve been putting off buying, because I’d prefer to have hard copies of them and they are rather on the expensive side. Three months ago, I decided I would buy myself at least meaningful books every month.
Social Media – While there is a lot of talk about the ills of social media, I actually have learnt to enjoy spending time there filling myself up. Instagram is now my new love and it’s been bringing me joy and inspiration. In October, I took part in Modern Gypsy’s #TheMindfulBreak and enjoyed sharing pictures and thoughts with others who took part. In November, I did the #FMSPhotoaDay Challenge and loved the creativity it encouraged.
Why am I sharing all this with you? Because I want to encourage you to fill yourself up with the things you enjoy doing. Let us nurture ourselves. Let us stop running on empty. It’s only when we fill ourselves up first, that we can give to others. As someone said, what is down in the well will come up in the bucket. Fill yourself up with joy!
Make yourself a priority. Fill yourself up so that you can give more to others. – Oprah Winfrey

Oh flowers… They make me happy too. I like buying books but mostly on sale I got a bunch of crime fiction. But I like the idea of buying something meaningful every month. It would make a wonderful collection.
I love instagram too… Twitter not so much. Instagram is my go to place for inspiration.
Thank you for reminding us that it’s important to nurture ourselves. As for me, I will make a nice hot cup of chocolate
How wonderful! The hot chocolate.
Thanks so much for joining in the celebrations, Raj.
Mind-blowing post, Corinne. I agree with your insights. Just filling up myself by reading such positive posts everyday. Congrats, Natz for your blog anniversary. May you be blessed with more blog birthdays!
Dear Vasantha,
Thanks so much. So glad to see you here.
And wonderful to know that you nurture yourself by reading such posts. 🙂
Natasha, I liked the theme of your blog – little snowflakes falling down as I type this. It’s super cool!
Thanks Anshu. It’s a plugin, and I use it every year during winters. 🙂
Liked your thoughts, Corinne! Why should we wait for someone, even if it’s our husband to do or get things for us or make us happy. We are responsible for our own happiness. Taking a leaf out of your own book, that’s what I am going to do now. Won’t be waiting for anyone to make me happy. 🙂
Hi Anshu,
In my 30s I did most of that. And cribbed about it. Made me feel awful and unloved. I now just go and buy/order myself some flowers every other week. And you will be surprised to hear I even set up dates with the DH, as he doesn’t.
And why not. After all it makes me feel loved and nurtured and picks me up and like how.
Thank you for your thoughts. 🙂
I jus love ur writings Corrine! N this write up was jus like a trigger for me to think abt now what shud I do next in my this new life..which now I have accepted gracefully n happily! Loads of love and best wishes go you Corrine! Thank you Natasha! Cant wait to read the next post!!!!
Thank you for swinging by Deepthi. Glad this resonated. Hope to see you around in the coming days.
So important to fill ourselves up. Did just that yesterday. Took a day off to goof off. I read a few chapters of a book I wanted to read. I went for a long walk and I watched some of my favourite series on amazon prime and I refused to feel guilty about it.
How lovely is that Sunita. Nothing nurtures us more than taking time off from the rigmaroles of the day, to nurture ourself.
Thank you for stopping by. 🙂
Beautiful post … loved it and especially the message – fill yourself and love your self so that you can give to others.
Thanks Shubhra. Yes, indeed a powerful message. Thanks to Corinne mindful thinking. Thank you for stopping by and doing in the blogiversary celebrations.
It’s a lovely way to fill our lives with simple yet meaningful things. Beautiful post, Corinne and something we all need to take note of.
Thank you so much for reading and leaving your imprints, Sanch. 🙂
Yes, we need to keep reminding ourselves of this little life lesson.
Fill yourself is a wise advice. Sometimes, doing small things bring you happiness. Like dancing in the rain.. Or going for a walk. Love yourself.
Corrine’s warmth exudes through her words.
Yes, Corinne words are always balm to the soul, Priya. Reassuring, thought-provoking and life altering. That’s why I had to have her write a guest post for me, that too #MondayMusings. 🙂
Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts.
What a lovely idea to fulfill your dreams by yourself. Your post brought home to me the fact that my husband is not alone in not gifting fresh flowers and not accompanying me for movies. He also doesn’t appreciate my time on Social media…. but hey! why am I talking about him! Like you said, I should nurture myself on my own……Thanks for reminding me about this and congratulations on your Blogiversary.
I am looking forward to reading your other guest blogger posts.
Hi Sunita,
I have been gifting myself flowers every other week, Sunita for years now. And because the DH never asks me out on a date, ever, so I am the one who sets up dates for us. How’s that ?? Ha! Ha!
Works for me as that fills my cup and leaves me brimming with love and joy.
So glad to have you join me in the celebrations. 🙂
Simple things in life bring more joy to the mind and soul. Your post reinstates the same. Just reading it made me feel so nice about my life
So glad to see you here, Anupriya. Happy to hear Corinne, lovely post made you feel good within.
Spot-on! Filling myself up doing the things I love is exactly what this India trip has been about–friendships, volunteering, sharing.
Thanks for your wisdom, Corinne!
So good to hear that D. It is pertinent to keep filling ones cup, so that one can recharge and rejuvenate and in turn fill others cup. Best way to brim with joy. 🙂
