Serenity Prayer

Serenity Prayer

“And the truth is that everybody is going to hurt you. You just have to find the ones worth suffering for.”

Bob Marley

Suffering is a personal choice. And it is for us to choose if we wish to suffer, or not. Our external environment can sometimes trigger us in ways unexpected.

Responding and not reacting lies in our hands. Responding from a place of compassion, while being aware that we are firm and have our boundaries in place.

The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr also attributed to St. Francis of Assisi is courage imparting, when suffering is what is given to us.

I’m grateful to my father who taught me this prayer as a kid.

God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I can,

and the wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time,

enjoying one moment at a time,

accepting hardships as a pathway to peace;

taking, as God did, this sinful world as it is,

not as I would have it;

trusting that you will make all things right

If I surrender to your will;

so that I may be reasonably happy in this life

and supremely happy with you in the next.

Amen!

This is a cover by Mansa Jimmy, an artist I admire. Mansa is from the Uttarakhand mountains in India (Himalayas) and lends serenity to our soul with her music.

  1. One of my favs. For decades I walked around with a pewter Serenity Prayer keyring. The letters were swollen and worn before I decided to remove it from my ring. I also taught this to my son when he was younger.

  2. I didn’t know there was a second part to this prayer. It is a powerful prayer, and the music gave me a few peaceful moments today. In our time of hate and strife, serenity is hard to find, but we must try.

  3. dear Natasha,
    I tried more than 20 times to write on your blog… unfortunately Error 403 appears and throws me off the page! 🙁
    this is the comment I wanted to leave for you:
    I love Bob Marley music! there is so much wisdom in his lyrics. And the music is simply electrifying! You have to dance, you can’t just sit and listen. Have a wonderful day, dear Natasha! ☺

  4. Typically I only hear/read the first part of the Serenity prayer, but it all needs to be there. Hope your week is going well 🙂

  5. Natasha,

    I know the first part of this prayer. I don’t know that I knew the rest of it until now. Thanks for sharing. We all need to find peace no matter what life hurls at us and surrender our all to God to tend to because ultimately it’s all in His hands. When we can do this then serenity will follow. Beautiful music and beautiful words. Thanks for joining the 4M party this week, my friend. Have a boogietastic week!
