Buddies in Arms: #Fiction
Buddies in Arms
Carla and Susan are kindergarten buddies. Now in their mid- sixties, nothing has changed between them. Not even their penchant for taking long walks, come rain or shine. Carla with her umbrella, Susan in her sun hat; just the way they had been as two gangly teenagers.
It’s no surprise, that they have managed to stay neighbours. They are married to their childhood sweethearts, who knew separating one from the other would be sacrilege.
This balmy summer evening, as they make their way through the cobbled path, admiring the myriad blooms, Susan stops short.
A helpless looking baby squirrel, lies sprawled in their path. The little thing is all skin, no hair.
“Poor chap, must have fallen from its nest. The wind has been a rogue today. I’ll take him in,” says Carla tenderly.
Before they know it, Mrs. Squirrel, draped in a sapphire gown and a pair of black boots appears, looking at them admonishingly.
Carla looks aghast.
Susan chirps, “Relax Hun, we got to go easy on those Sangrias.”

How nice! Fabulous story, Natasha. Thank you for making me laugh.
Thank you so much for reading Vinitha
Hahaha that ending absolutely loved it.
I’m so thrilled you did, Raj. <3
Oh yeah! That’s me and my bestie, knocking down vodkas on a rainy night! 😛
Ha! Ha! I hear you Shilpa. That’s me and my bestie too. :)))
Haha awesome… I was wondering “what exactly is happening” and then you made me chuckle!
:))) Thanks for reading Aks. 🙂
The highs of togetherness, high on spirits! Hahaha…good one Natasha. That was most unexpected twist.
Ha! ha! yes Anagha. The “spirit” of togetherness indeed. ;-))) Thank you for reading.
Hahaha, I did not see this coming!
And I’m craving a Sangria now!
Think I’ve gotten over my predilection for Sangria, but now that you say so I’m wondering too. :)) Thanks Soumya for reading.
And I cannot stop my laugh..what an interesting end!!
Thanks dear Rekha <3 I'm glad this made you happy. :))
hehe Sangrias now! Enjoyed reading this short tale, Nats. Enjoyed the beauty and simplicity of your story.
Thanks Dear Rachna. Im so glad you did. 🙂
Reminds me of one rainy afternoon when my friend and I ( both newly 60) were knocking down Whiskey Sours in the middle of the afternoon….
Ha! Ha! Now that sounds so much fun. I recently discovered Whisky sour and oh dear God! It sure is divine. I don’t drink whisky but this was something else totally. :))
How sweet! I wish I have a friend like her in the twilight years, whom I could drown my blues with! So beautifully told, Natasha, as if dipped in the magic of the Sangria itself! Loving your short tales, dear. Keep them coming. I feel inspired…now all I need is to feel brave enough to have a go at one of the prompts very soon. 🙂
Yes, please do Esha.
And thank you for your kind words. They made my day. 🙂
